Animal care, farming practices and meat choices
The site’s approach
AMNA’s food criteria include animal care, feed and slaughter. Under those criteria, products from animals kept in abusive or unclean conditions do not qualify as halal. Ask how an animal was raised and handled as well as how it was slaughtered. Read the linked criteria for the religious basis of the site’s approach.
Questions about the exact supply chain
Ask the producer about feed, housing, access to the outdoors, veterinary care, transport and slaughter. A store name or the size of a farm does not establish these practices for a particular product.
What an organic label tells you
USDA organic livestock standards cover areas including feed, health care and living conditions. Organic producers keep production records and undergo annual on-site inspections. Organic is a separate standard from halal certification.
Compare evidence for each claim
Verify the organic certification where relevant, the applicable halal evidence and handling during cutting, storage and packaging. Ask how pork and other species are separated and how shared equipment is cleaned.
