Kosher and halal food labels: check the claim
A label and a certificate answer different questions
Identify the certifier, its standard, the exact product and the certificate’s validity. A word or symbol on a pack needs to be matched to the authority behind it.
A current Virginia example
Virginia Code § 3.2-5124 requires information identifying the authority behind a kosher or halal designation for repackaged or unwrapped food offered for sale. This is a Virginia requirement; check the applicable jurisdiction for another location.
Checking a product
Contact the named certifier or manufacturer to verify what is covered. A kosher certification does not by itself establish halal certification.
